Καταπιανόμαστε σήμερα με ένα από τα ομορφότερα και δημοφιλέστερα τραγούδια των WHITESNAKE, το περίφημο “Still of the night”. Κυκλοφόρησε το 1987, από το ομώνυμο, εξαιρετικά επιτυχημένο, άλμπουμ του συγκροτήματος και κατέκτησε τα βρετανικά chart, σημειώνοντας την τρίτη κατά σειρά υψηλότερη θέση πίσω από τα “Here I go again” και “Is this love”.
Τι κάνει το “Still of the night” τόσο όμορφο και ξεχωριστό; Πολλά πράγματα θα μπορούσε να πει κανείς. Από την καθηλωτική του ατμόσφαιρα, τον εξαιρετικό συνδυασμό των blues καταβολών της μπάντας με το πιο hard rock ήχο της συνέχειας της και τα μαγευτικά του riff, μέχρι τους δυνατούς του στίχους και την συγκλονιστική ερμηνεία του David Coverdale.
Όσοι γνωρίζετε καλά το κομμάτι, και προφανώς είστε πολλοί, μπορείτε με ευκολία να διαπιστώσετε την επιρροή του από τον ήχο των LED ZEPPELIN, με σημεία που φέρνουν στο νου το “Whole lotta love”, το “Kashmir” ή το “Black dog”.
Παρ’ όλα αυτά ο ηγέτης του σχήματος, που είναι και αυτός που συνέλαβε την ιδέα και ευθύνεται στον μεγαλύτερο βαθμό για τη σύνθεσή του, (συνέβαλε και ο John Sykes), για κανένα λόγο δεν επικαλείται τους ZEPPELIN ως επιρροή του (χωρίς να το αρνείται κιόλας), αλλά τον Elvis Presley και τον Jeff Beck! Ο ίδιος έχει δώσει και πολλές ακόμη ενδιαφέρουσες πληροφορίες για την ιστορία πίσω από το τεράστιο αυτό κομμάτι.
«Η ιστορία του “Still of the night” είναι η εξής:… Πριν πάρα πολλά χρόνια πήγα στο σπίτι της γιαγιάς μου στα βόρεια της Αγγλίας, λόγω του ότι πέθανε. Εκεί υπήρχε μια σοφίτα όπου είχα τοποθετήσει όλες τις πρώτες και demo δουλειές μου με τους DEEP PURPLE. Τις άρπαξα και τις έβαλα στην τσάντα μου, ώστε αργότερα να τις ακούσω ξανά όλες. Έτσι λοιπόν, άκουσα μια παλιά σύνθεση του Ritchie Blackmore, μου άρεσε πολύ το riff, το οποίο πήρα, επεξεργάστηκα, πρόσθεσα τα δικά μου στοιχεία κι αφού γενικώς του άλλαξα όλη τη δομή, πήγα και το έδωσα στον John Sykes, ο οποίος με τη σειρά του έβαλε το δικό του χεράκι έτσι ώστε να φτάσει στην τελική του μορφή το τραγούδι. Είναι ένα από τα αγαπημένα μου riff! Υπάρχει μεγάλη σύγκριση με τους LED ZEPPELIN, κάτι το οποίο δε με ενοχλεί αφού οι ZEPPELIN είναι πραγματικά φοβεροί. Παρ’ όλα αυτά η επιρροή μου κατά κύριο λόγο, είναι από ένα από τα αγαπημένα μου τραγούδια ως παιδί, το “Jailhouse Rock” του Elvis Presley, ενώ η δεύτερη τεράστια επιρροή μου ήταν το “Rice pudding” του Jeff Beck, όσο κι αν πολλοί εκπλήσσονται από αυτό! Είναι από τα αγαπημένα μου τραγούδια που θέλω να παίζουμε στα live μας. Όλοι οι κιθαρίστες μου ανέκαθεν αγαπούσαν να παίζουν το συγκεκριμένο τραγούδι χωρίς να εξαιρείται κανείς! Είναι ένα σεξουαλικά καταστροφικό τραγούδι…!!»
Και πράγματι, ο Coverdale θέλει να παίζουν live το εν λόγω κομμάτι, αφού μέχρι σήμερα είναι το δεύτερο πιο πολυπαιγμένο τους (μετρά πάνω από 750 φορές) και μάλιστα σχεδόν πάντα αποτελεί το τελευταίο encore του setlist τους.
Να πούμε κλείνοντας, ότι το “Still of the night” ήταν το πρώτο single που κυκλοφόρησε έχοντας ως b-side τα “Here I go again” και “ You’re Gonna Break My Heart Again”.
EXTRA TRIVIA:
– Στο video clip του “Still of the night” αλλά και των “Here I go again”, “Is this love” και “Give me all your love”, εμφανίζεται η tour σύνθεση των WHITESNAKE, δηλαδή οι Vandenberg, Cambell, Sarzo και Aldridge, ενώ στην ηχογράφηση ήταν οι Sykes, Murray και Dunbar!
– Ενώ στο video clip φαίνεται να παίζει με δοξάρι ο Vandenberg την κιθάρα στο ξεκίνημα του solo, το σημείο αυτό έχει ηχογραφηθεί μέσω synthesizer και sampler από τον τεράστιο πληκτρά Don Airey, ο οποίος συμμετείχε ως guest στο άλμπουμ.
– Επίσης στο ίδιο video clip, εμφανίζεται το εντυπωσιακό μοντέλο Tawny Kitaen, Φιλανδή στην καταγωγή και εκείνη την περίοδο γυναίκα του D. Coverdale.

Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with
screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive
a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements,

Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website.
In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels;
descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups),

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over seven different coloring options.
Animations – person with epilepsy can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.
Browser and assistive technology compatibility
We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers).
